-
Mastery
is the mysterious process during which, what is at first difficult becomes
progressively easier and more pleasurable through practice.
-
Mastery
is not a goal or a destination but rather a process, a journey.
-
The
modern world is a conspiracy against Mastery.
We’re continually bombarded with promises of immediate
gratification, instant success and fast, temporary relief.
-
The
American vision of the good life is an endless series of climatic moments.
But the real juice of life is to be found not nearly so much in the
products of our efforts as in the process of living itself, in how it feels
to be alive.
-
Our
pre-occupation with goals, results and climatic moments robs us of countless
hours of the time of our lives. We
awaken in the morning and hurry to get dressed. Because our goal is to get dressed, we don’t attend to the
pleasurable sensations of a shower. We
hurry to eat breakfast, but miss the pleasures of eating and drinking.
We hurry to get to work and miss the beauty of the drive.
-
Because
the majority of the time of our lives are made up of mundane activities, we
must learn to focus on the mundane and enjoy and appreciate that which makes
up the majority of our lives.
- When members of the Ryder Cup team were asked was
winning the Ryder Cup one of the greatest moments of their lives, they
answered “Yes.” The only
problem is that a moment is just that – a moment.
What are they doing the rest of the time – hopefully practicing.
We must learn to appreciate, savor and enjoy the practice or the
journey. With the exception of a few fleeting climactic moments, the journey
is all we have.
