Chief
Executive Briefing # 17
Where
CEB Members Spend Their Time
|
Following
is a compilation of ideas expressed by CEB members on this issue.
-
Sales
and marketing
More than 75% of CEB members list sales and marketing as one of their highest
priorities, scheduling a significant amount of their time for this area. In addition, sales and marketing was listed twice as often as
any other priority
-
People
Chief executives spend a significant amount of time solving people
problems. Their emphasis is on
teaching and encouraging employees, as well as mediating conflicts among
employees.
-
Reviewing
company data
Chief executives allocate much of their time to reviewing company
reports and data, focusing the bulk of their efforts on financial data.
-
New
technologies and product development
As markets become more and more competitive, chief executives report
spending greater amounts of time evaluating new technologies and new product
development.
-
Operations
Many, although not all, chief executives report that they deal directly
with operational and administrative issues in their companies.
-
Planning
A significant number of executives indicate that they are able to
allocate time for long-range planning and strategic and tactical issues,
although many reported not focusing their efforts in this area.
-
Focusing
on proactive thinking versus reactive
Not surprisingly, most executives report that they are proactive versus
reactive, taking the time to evaluate their markets and their company
position, anticipating problems – and preventing them – before they
arise.
