Tim Gase Named
E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist
Tim
Gase, a CEBI member (Columbus Local Board) and regular contributor at CEBI
Summits, was honored this year as a Finalist in the Ernst & Young
Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Ohio. Tim and his partner, Ken Lloyd,
purchased Peerless Saw Company, of which Tim was President at the time, in 1999.
Since that time, Tim and Ken have grown the
company significantly, while improving operating results and productivity.
Forward-thinking strategies, including gainsharing, have contributed to an
amazing level of employee loyalty. Turnover among their 51 employees for
the past two years has been zero.
Tim is also an author. His recent book
The Small Business Savings Plan has helped countless companies apply
his frugal mindset to reduce their expenses and improve bottom-line
results.
Please join us in congratulating Tim Gase on
this outstanding achievement and honor.
"You Can Observe a Lot Just
by Watching"
Yogi
Berra, one of the great philosophers of modern times, once said: "You can
observe a lot just by watching." Are you regularly applying that lesson to
your business?
I believe there are some readily observable indicators of excellence (or lack
thereof) in almost every business. Ask any woman about how important the
condition of the restroom is -- at a restaurant, theatre, department store, or
anywhere, for that matter. If they can't keep the restroom in good order, what
about the rest of the operation -- like the kitchen?
A good, readily observable indicator of
whether a merchant is on his game, isn't it?

Is it Me or is it the Economy?
Members who attended the Spring Summit
enjoyed the talk by Bob Lawson, Ph.D., a Professor of Economics from Capital
University in Columbus, OH.
Bob was talking about the Federal Reserve's
management of monetary policy, in its attempt to stimulate the economy or
control inflation.
He said: "If you do what the Fed
supposes you'll do when they increase the money supply, it could be just the wrong
thing for you and your business." At least one of our members
fully agrees.

Fall Summit Reminder
Our Fall Summit will be a
return to a favorite venue of CEBI members -- Virginia Crossings Resort in Glen
Allen (Richmond), VA. The Summit lineup will include Executive Briefings
by members, meetings of the National Boards and some topic-specific
roundtables or workshops. For a sample of presentations from prior
Summits, see the Summit
Library page (member user name and password required).
If you miss this Summit, you'll
be missing a great event. Mark your calendar for the Fall
Summit, November 13-14.
