6 Keys to Business Success
Guest Article

My friend Frank DeVita, founder and President of DeVita & Associates, recently addressed a group of business owners and gave them one of the best checklists of success principles I've heard in a long time.

As CEBI members well know, the keys to success in a mid-sized business are a curious mix of contradictions, such as perseverance vs. cutting your losses or knowing most every job in the place vs. spending your time on only your own best and highest use.

Frank has written a guest article, expanding upon  his
"6 Principles of Business Success" that I think you'll find interesting, provocative and profitable.

8 Strategies for
Running Your Business by the Book

A lot has been written and taught about how you're "supposed to" run a business.  Most businesses, however, fail to install the disciplines, systems and processes to run their companies "by the numbers".

I know of an exception, however -- a company that plans, forecasts, and knows where they're going at all times.  They're the exception among small businesses, in my experience.  As a result, they know their income, their cash flow, their manpower requirements and their profitability months in advance.

Want your business to be more consistent and predictable?  Here are 8 Strategies for Running Your Business by the Book.

Social Media Has its Fans

A recent article about companies blocking social media websites generated a flurry of reader comments.  While many business owners see social media as "social notworking", several disagree.

Here are some of the comments in response to that article....

We'll be comparing experiences and best practices in an All-Member Forum on "Social Media as a Business-to-Business E-Marketing Tool".at the

Employees are Asking
"What Have You Done for Me Lately?"

A recent survey by Right Management, a global player in recruiting and outplacement, reports that 60% of employees surveyed in 2009 said they intended to leave their jobs when the market got better.

You may disagree about whether the employment market is getting better or when it will.  One thing's for sure, employees remember the sacrifices they made to help companies survive, and they're wondering when that score might be squared up.

In a recent CEBI meeting, a member suggested this might not be a bad time to remind employees what, in fact, they have been getting and continue to get in total compensation.   Here's how to do that....

And, as always, we're interested in your ideas for newsletter articles.  Would you perhaps write a guest Editorial?  Please let us know if you have ideas or material you'd be willing to share with others.

Thanks,

Live to Fight
Another Day

Business owners have recently weathered one of the "survival periods" of American business.  Continuing uncertainty in both the political and economic environments suggest, as Yogi once said, "It ain't over 'till it's over."

In times where survival is paramount, what's important is not winning or losing, but rather living to fight another day.  Here are 3 Lessons for Living to Fight Another Day

An Orgy of Ideas

In his book Revolutionary Wealth, Alvin Toffler makes several observations.  First, that knowledge is promiscuous. Secondly, that a piece of knowledge alone is trivia -- its value exponentializes when combined with other knowledge. And, finally, he confirms that "innovation is a contact sport".

A recent Wall Street Journal Article asserts, "The rate of cultural and economic progress depends on the rate at which ideas are having sex."
