Chief Executive Boards International Update

CEBI Adds
Member Accountability Option

Many CEBI members regard themselves accountable to their Boards to act on ideas and advice they take away from Board Meetings.  In response to several member requests, we've added an "Accountability" checkbox to the Hot List section of Board Evaluations.

Of course, this is optional -- check the box only on those things you'd like your Board to follow up on.   We've added to our system the ability to track those items, keep them in front of you from meeting to meeting, and also mark them "Completed" at which time they drop off your
Board's accountability list.

Spring Summit attendees saw this for the first time, and those who checked Hot List items will find those items in their meeting packet for their next Board meeting.

As always, we're looking for ways to more effectively serve our members, and these kinds of ideas are always welcome.

Just Say "Yes"

Nancy Reagan's answer to the drug problem in the US was, "Just Say No". Not bad advice for young people thinking about experimenting with drugs, and not bad advice for parents and business owners, on occasion.

Probably not a good idea for sales or sales support people who are answering customer questions about a product or service.
If you hear sales support, technical support or customer service reps beginning an answer with "no", there's a problem.  There's almost no question a customer asks to which the answer must start with "no".

What would you prefer they were saying?

CEBI Members Saving Big Money with Medical Expense Reimbursement Plans

CEBI Members are always on the lookout for a way to save a little money.  Sometimes they find a lot of money to be saved.   This idea was brought to us by a member who's been saving about $200k/year on Health Care for the past 5 years or so.  Two more members have recently implemented these plans, and are on track to save $35k/year and $100k/year respectively.

Typical savings are $1,000 to $2,500 per employee per year, depending on pricing and coverage of your existing group health plan.

Are you missing out on this?   Why?  Have a look at the video overview of Medical Expense Reimbursement Plans, and if you're interested in saving some serious money on Health Care, follow the links for a free assessment of your savings potential.

Wholly Cow!   CEBI Members Roast a Steer, Land on Front Page of WSJ

Food, friends, fire, whiskey, cigars, whole animals.  Two CEBI members staged a customer appreciation event that went viral.  Member Jeff Bannister saw a YouTube video about a guy in Argentina who roasted a whole steer over an open fire.  The gauntlet had been thrown.

Fellow CEBI member Brad Cunningham agreed to co-sponsor the event, providing the staff, logistics and site (at his business - Network Controls & Electric).  The rest is history.  1,000 pounds of steel and $12,000 later, they produced "Bovinova 2011 - An Epicurean Cattle Roast".

A Wall Street Journal food editor picked up on the story, attended the event and chronicled it for the world.  Those who claim to remember the 70's would call this "a happening".

Have a look at the WSJ article, video and slide show....

Incentive Compensation Plan
Not Working?
   You're Not Alone

Most incentive compensation plans don't work very well.  In some cases, it's misalignment with the company's objectives.  In others, it's that the incentive metrics are wrong -- that those on the plan simply don't believe they can consistently meet or beat the plan parameters and get a bonus.

And, in other cases, it's just a flawed plan design.  One such plan recently crossed my radar screen.  After looking at what he was really trying to accomplish and what was not working with the existing plan, he made some major structural changes.   And they worked.

Here's how......

And, as always, we're interested in your ideas for newsletter articles.  Would you perhaps write a guest Editorial?  Please let us know if you have ideas or material you'd be willing to share with others.

Thanks,

Spring Summit Briefings Are Online

CEBI members regularly refer to Executive Briefings as a resource for others looking for ideas on handling an opportunity, situation or problem.

Briefings from the 2011 Spring Summit are sure to be similarly quoted.   They're all up and available for your use  in the Summit Presentation Library.  Remember, you're welcome to use this material within your own company -- just don't distribute it outside the CEBI community.

U.S. Manufacturing Not Down for the Count

Myth:  "America doesn't make anything any more."
Fact:  U.S. Manufacturing is up by 2.5x since 1972

Myth:  "American manufacturing is not productive."
Fact:  U.S. Manufacturing is producing 2.5x more with 25% fewer workers.  Automation and IT are the driving forces of both trends.

Fact:  Boston Consulting Group predicts that by 2015, "global manufacturers will view the U.S. as equal to if not better-than China."
