Big Banks Back in Small Biz
Market
CEBI members regularly ask "What kinds of trends do you pick up on as you
travel around to different Boards?" Great question, and part of why
I may have the best job in the world. This
month's news flash came from a Board in Ohio. A member actually got a
loan from a big bank! For the past two years, the only bank a small
business owner has been welcome at was a community bank. In
the macro sense, this is earth-shaking news. This is a sea change
in the banking climate, and we're hopeful it's an emerging trend, not just a
fluke. Big banks getting back in the small business market, actually
making some loans would be a huge boost for not only small business customers
but also the economy at large.
What's My Business Worth?
There's an old saying
among business brokers and firms that handle mergers and acquisitions:
"You never
want to be the first person who tells someone what his business is really
worth"
Many business owners,
including some Chief
Executive Boards International members, have fanciful ideas about
what someone might pay for their business.
What's your business really
worth? Probably less than you think, but wouldn't it be a good idea to
know?

Have It Your Way
Again this past month, I
had a vendor of whom I'm a raving
fan deliver just what I wanted, the way I wanted it. Rare, approaching
non-existent.
In my experience, there
are precious few vendors who are willing to do business the way I want to.
Burger King, in a landmark set of commercials in 1986, coined the phrase,
"Have it your way". Competing with rivals McDonald's, who offered a
limited, "standard" menu at the time, this catchy jingle got them some
traction in a crowded market space
Here's
what happened......
What's One Good Idea Worth?
It's a continuing amazement to me how many good
ideas (or small hunches that become great ideas) come out of a typical CEBI
meeting. That's not the only place, however.
I'm learning that you have to work at somehow getting away
from your day-to-day grind to get exposed to good
ideas.
This past month, a great idea came my way in the form
of a webinar. And, curiously, a webinar I didn't see myself, but Alison
did see.

Don Rumsfeld, President
Bush's "foot in mouth" Secretary of Defense, once
said of the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq,
"There are known
knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know
there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are
some things we do not know. But there are also unknown
unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know."
How
do you mitigate unknown unknowns?

Tell,
then Show --
A Mantra for Change
"A
leader with no followers is just a guy out taking a walk"
says Harry Loyle, Managing Director of Cybeck
Capital Partners.
Harry
says the grade-school activity of "show and tell"
doesn't work in business. Rather,
you need to tell people what you want, and then show
them what you mean by that. Here
are some ideas on how to do that........
Start
Planning Today for Your Partner's Exit
Partners -- can't live with them, can't live without them.
Or can you? The consensus among CEBI members is that partners rarely
go the distance. The one exception is when you're bringing in
partners to take yourself out.
Otherwise, it's almost inevitable that partners will go separate
ways. If you have a partner, you may want to have an exit strategy - for
either your partner or yourself.
